International arrival at LAX, then licensed retail: the order that matters

Published August 31, 2026 · 6 min read · adults 21+

International arrivals at LAX almost all dump you into Tom Bradley (Terminal B) or an allied terminal, then into U.S. Customs and Border Protection. California adult-use retail is legal for visitors 21+ with a physical passport. That sentence has an order: CBP first, bags first, then leave the federal arrivals process, then a licensed shop. Reverse it on the way home and you have created a customs problem in another country.

The inbound sequence

You cannot buy cannabis in the sterile international arrivals hall. There is no licensed retailer airside. After CBP, you are landside — tired, often with a full suitcase, often with a connection or a hotel on Century. If your next flight is the same day and leaves the United States, skip retail entirely. If California is the stay, a passport works as ID at a licensed counter. A photo of a passport does not.

Verify the shop the way the state tells you to

Los Angeles has a large unlicensed storefront problem. The Department of Cannabis Control tells consumers to scan the license QR or use the official license search before buying. That is the entire point of the official video above. This publisher is not a licensee and does not sell anything. A labeled advertising partner elsewhere on the site is disclosed as paid; it is still your job to confirm the shop is licensed at the address you are standing in.

Ground time after an international landing

CBP wait, bag wait, and the walk to a rideshare are not the same as a domestic connection. Add them before you invent a “quick dispensary run.” The official LAX Metro Transit Center video is useful orientation for how the airport is trying to move people off the horseshoe — it is not a promise that rail is the fastest path the hour you land. Check flylax.com and your airline’s terminal map.

The outbound international hard stop

If you later depart Tom Bradley for another country, arrive at the airport with nothing. Several destination countries treat residual cannabis — including a forgotten gummy — as a criminal matter. There is no “I bought it legally in California” speech that works at a foreign inspection desk. Finish, gift to a 21+ adult who is staying, or leave the product in California before you re-enter the federal departure process.
