Landside vs airside at LAX: where California cannabis rules actually apply
Travelers mix two different maps at LAX. One is the horseshoe of terminals, curbs, and parking — the part the City of Los Angeles actually runs. The other is the sterile area past TSA, the jet bridge, and the aircraft. Cannabis policy does not treat those as the same place, even though you walk from one into the other with a boarding pass.
Landside: curb, arrivals, and the public loop
Landside is everything before a security checkpoint: arrivals and departures roadways, parking, the Metro Transit Center, rental-car connections, and the public parts of each terminal lobby. California adult-use possession limits (28.5 grams of flower / 8 grams of concentrate for adults 21+) are a state rule. LAX Airport Police have published a local policy that is more permissive about simple possession inside the airport than most U.S. airports. That is still not a permission to consume, sell, or open a package on the curb.
Public consumption is illegal in California — sidewalks, beaches, parks, rideshares, and the airport roadway all count. Open-container rules apply in vehicles. A labeled advertising partner on this site is a licensed retailer off-airport, not a lounge inside a terminal.
The checkpoint is the federal line
TSA screens for threats to aviation, not for state-legal cannabis. Their own public materials say officers are not looking for marijuana — and also that they refer suspected violations of law to local police when they find them. Crossing that line with cannabis is still a federal problem because the sterile area and the aircraft are federal jurisdiction. This journal is not a how-to for carrying product onto a plane; the short instruction is: do not.
Airside: terminals after screening, then the aircraft
After you clear security you are in the sterile area. Inter-terminal walking connections exist post-security at LAX; LAWA has documented that you can move between terminals without exiting. That is useful for a food stop. It is not a cannabis retail zone. There is no licensed dispensary airside. If you already bought something on a previous landside trip, you still cannot take it onto an aircraft.

Landside: state possession rules + LAX local policy + no public consumption.
Checkpoint: federal screening. Do not bring cannabis through it.
Airside / aircraft: federal. Product bought in California stays in California.
If your connection is long enough to leave the airport, budget the return through the same checkpoint you will actually use — not an average. Peak summer and Monday mornings at Tom Bradley are not the same as a midweek Terminal 1 lunch hour.
