Can you fly with weed from LAX? The real rules
This is the most-asked question in California cannabis, and the honest answer has two halves that point in opposite directions.
Half one: LAX itself is unusually permissive
LAX Airport Police policy allows adults 21+ to possess cannabis within California's legal limit (28.5g flower / 8g concentrate) inside the airport. You will not be arrested by local police for simply having a legal amount at LAX. This is an LAX-specific policy — most US airports offer nothing like it.
Half two: the plane is federal territory
The security checkpoint and everything past it operates under federal jurisdiction, and cannabis remains federally illegal. TSA officers are screening for weapons and explosives, not drugs — their own policy says so — but when they do encounter cannabis, they refer it to local law enforcement. At LAX that referral usually ends with the state-legal-amount answer above. The real risk isn't the checkpoint: it's what happens when you land. Carrying cannabis across state lines is a federal offense regardless of the laws on either end, and arriving in a non-legal state (or another country) with product turns a $40 purchase into a genuine legal problem.
So what do people actually do?
Checked vs carry-on changes nothing — federal law applies to both. Vape pens have an extra wrinkle: lithium batteries must ride in the cabin, never checked, which puts the device in front of the checkpoint by rule. Edibles are the most commonly "forgotten" item; treat them as identical to flower legally. The clean answers are: finish it, gift it (legal between adults 21+ in California, up to an ounce, no payment), or dispose of it before security. Plan purchases so nothing is left over — that's the whole trick.
International travelers: a harder no
Whatever tolerance exists domestically evaporates at international customs. Several countries treat trace cannabis as a serious criminal matter. If you're flying out of Tom Bradley, arrive at the airport with nothing — not a vape, not half a gummy in a jacket pocket.
