Cannabis measurements & pricing in California: grams, eighths, and what things cost
Every menu board at a licensed dispensary is priced by weight, and the weight vocabulary is the one thing budtenders assume you already know. You don't need to — here's the ladder, in plain terms, with what each step actually costs.
The measurement ladder
Cannabis flower is priced in fractions of an ounce, a holdover from long before legalization that never went away:
Gram (1g) — the smallest standard unit, roughly enough for 1–2 joints. Eighth (3.5g) — an eighth of an ounce, the default purchase size for most buyers. Quarter (7g) — two eighths. Half (14g) — half an ounce. Ounce (28g, sold up to the legal limit of 28.5g) — the largest single-transaction purchase allowed by law.
What things actually cost
Prices vary by shop, brand tier, and local cannabis tax, but California street-legal pricing generally lands in these ranges: a gram runs $8–$15, an eighth $25–$50, a quarter $45–$90, a half $80–$160, and an ounce $150–$300. Budget and "value" brands sit at the low end of every range; small-batch or high-THC cultivars sit at the top. Pre-rolls are typically priced per unit (a single 0.5–1g pre-roll runs $6–$12) rather than by the gram.
Purchase limits — the legal ceiling
California caps any single transaction, per day, at 28.5 grams of flower or 8 grams of concentrate for adults 21+. A dispensary's point-of-sale system enforces this automatically; you can't buy more in one visit even if you wanted to. Getting the best value
Price per gram drops as the size goes up — an ounce is almost always the cheapest per-gram option, an eighth the most flexible for trying something new without commitment.
